RV250 / WARNING!

The SYM rv250 has a glitch that prevents it from easily being sold. The odometer reverts to all zeros when it accumulates 6500 miles. This is only for scooters with Miles, not Kilometers. I contacted the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation and was told to mark the title Unknown Miles.

Two prospective buyers backed out because of this issue. I called several SYM dealers and none could provide an answer. I tried Lance Powersports and have not received a reply.

This is a good scooter but you better be prepared to either sell it prior to 6500 miles or learn to live with it and keep it forever.

VS250 / Selling my rv 250 in PA

At age 79 its time to pass on/sell a truly terrific scoot. I've enjoyed Honda, Yamaha and Moto scooters and the rv250 is by far superior in appearance, ease of maintenance (the Miata of scooters) ride and best of all it's so dependable.

The definition of a successful ride is returning home without an accident, ticket or breakdown. Unfortunately I experienced the first two but never the last on my always dependable SYM rv250

If you're interested in owning a superior maxi scooter at a good price, go to Craigslist Pittsburgh under motorcycles for details.

Can't help you with the x-Creen but I did add a similar type unit to a Yamaha. It worked but created a minor vision problem - not seeing through it but it was annoying being mounted just below my sight line.

I installed an Isotta windscreen on my RV 250 and am pleased. The Isotta is strong, easily installed and does what it's advertised to do - keep the wind off my torso and provide excellent rain protection w/o compromising my line of sight.

Hi Mike & Forum members,

I spoke with the SW PA potential dealer several times and he's either a big cc guy and/or has a history of weak sales with smaller bikes. Maybe being a former Kawasaki dealer (years ago) he has a propensity toward bigger bikes. I agree, a 200cc bike can do the job but it's his call.

I understand why SYM/Lance Motorsports is having a difficult time establishing a dealer network. I connected the folks in California with a potential dealer in southwestern Pennsylvania where hills take precedence over flat land riding. The problem is that SYM/Lance only offers smaller CC bikes not suitable for foothill country and mountains. Small cc bikes are OK but don't work with northeastern US topography.

I admire Mike and his tenacity but not his reluctance to push SYM for larger displacement scoots.

Leafing thru the shop manual I came across a strange term, at least to me. It reads when checking the oil place the scooter on the "primary" stand. Is this the center stand or side stand?

RV250 / Amps for electric clothing kit

Recently I saw an ad for Gerbing's 12v 90 watt Electric Clothing Kit (vest, pants, gloves, socks and controller). The question is will the rv250 support a 90 watt kit and how many amps does 90 watts draw?

According to another website, 500cc's is recommended to handle 90 watts. My knowledge of MC electricity is limited or more accurately, nonexistent so I need the Forum's collective advice.

A knowledgeable employee at Cycle Recyclers in Rochester, PA, a large graveyard for old and wrecked motorcycles, helped me find the correct match to mount mirrors on my rv250.

Apparently Suzuki made metal mirrors with extensions in the 70's and they're a perfect fit. Rectangular mirrors with strong metal stems provide a clear view both to the side and rear. What a difference! Today I tested the mirrors on I-376, country roads, suburban riding and over some not so smooth county roads. No vibration. Suzuki found the right combination of stem length & a strong but flexible/adjustable base. All for $10.

BTW I recently installed a larger Isotta windshield and didn't need to remove it to install the mirrors. I removed the stock mirrors and used a black filter-like filler to cover the holes and keep water from accumulating. It's the same material plumbers use to cover water pipes to keep them from sweating and can easily be cut to any configuration or size with a box cutter.

Don't know how to post pics directly to this forum but I'll ask the tech guy at work to show me.

Thanks for the picture, now I get it. Which "riser" or mount did you use? I went to the recommended mount site but can't determine which unit to order. Which (model #) do you recommend and/or which did you use?

BTW I like the picture and how you adapted it to the mirror.

Thanks for the site tip but I'm not sure which 1"mount or extenders I need. Did you use the mounts and extenders on the stock folding mirrors, on a new set of 10mm mirrors screwed onto the handlebar openings or another option that I'm missing?

RV250 / Backrest rv250

I can't seem to master the search button/link on this Forum (mostly because I'm not the sharpest knife in the drawer). Somewhere there's a thread about taking a headrest from a pickup or several different trucks with an 8" center that can be inserted to into the seat pan of an rv250 to be used as a backrest.

Anyone know of the thread or which pickup trucks?

Thread size is 10mm, standard on all but Yamaha scooters. Yamaha has different thread pattern but the size is the same.

Later this week - when the rain stops in southwestern PA - I'll go to a local MC recycling yard and try various lengths then do a reply on this forum.

RV250 / handlebar mounted mirror

Somewhere on this Forum I read that handlebar mirrors can be mounted by removing rubber caps located next to the brake master cylinders. What thread size is the receiver? Some say 6mm and others say the receiver is designed to accept universal mirrors (10mm) excluding Yamaha, which has a reverse thread.

Pleez keep the Forum entries. When I bought my rv250 the Forum was, and continues to be, an extremely valuable asset in terms of information that a newbie needs such as mechanicals, whos, whats and wheres for accessories, spark plugs, oil, windshields etc.

This Forum is a God-send both for newbies and more "senior" members. I read each thread, took notes and compiled a shopping and do-it-yourself list filled with what I need to know about my scoot.

Over the years I've participated in several scooter forums and this is by far the best. If ain't broke...
