Title: What is the latest news from SYM?
Post by: vintagegarage on November 25, 2020, 06:46:44 AM
Not sure if anyone else on this forum owns stock in Sanyang Motor Company, but I do.  For years, the price of their stock has just been bumping along the flat line, but now suddenly, it is spiking upward.  I have been unable to find any news on the financial sites about SYM to see what is causing it.  Trading activity is suddenly brisk.  Maybe SYM is about to be bought out?  It trades on the Taiwan exchange as 2206.  Have a look at this link:
https://www.wsj.com/market-data/quotes/TW/XTAI/2206/advanced-chart (https://www.wsj.com/market-data/quotes/TW/XTAI/2206/advanced-chart)

and then look at the three year chart to see what I mean.  Hopefully, there is someone on this forum who lives in Taiwan who has more news or someone who is better at searching the web than I am that can shed some light on this.. much appreciated.

P.S. I am still looking to buy Symbas in any condition with Florida titles...

Looks like a spike then back to reality, but up generally.
I know that in the U.S. bike sales overall are up, & suspect that may be true globally since folks are keeping off mass transit in droves due to the pandemic.

"Looks like a spike then back to reality, but up generally."  I think you might be looking at a one day chart.  Please go to your same yahoo finance link, and look at the 5 year chart.  The stock was bumping along around 20 TWD for 5 years paying a regular small dividend, and then over the past couple of weeks has climbed up to over 30 TWD on unusually high volume and is still there.  I think there may have been some sort of event or rumor that kicked it off rather than a change in public habits over the course of the year.   If SYM traded on the New York Exchange, there would be a dozen news stories with the explanation, but it is hard to find news from the TW exchange.  Has anyone been able to find a recent news story about SYM?  I keep thinking they might have bought a company, sold assets, or are a takeover target.. something like that..

I live in Hong Kong and have relatives in Taiwan. Because of the way HK is going, we might leave and one option is Taiwan, so I pay attention to Taiwan news. There was some about Sanyang 三阳 (SYM) being very popular in S America but it isn't the kind of news of a deal or anything like that which could send shares suddenly higher.

Thoppa.. thanks for those links.. they will be helpful.  We get daily news from HK here, but very little news from Taiwan.. 2020 was the first year in five that I haven't visited Taiwan and HK.  Last year, I visited KYMCO in Kaohsiung City, and on the way saw the rising popularity of Gogoro scooters.  As you know, scooters in Shanghai, and perhaps many or all of the major cities in mainland China are now all electric.  I wonder if SYM is working some electric scooter or motorcycle deal...

Hi,

Gogoro are great - the battery swap stations in Taipei work so well. I'd get an electric scoot if they had that here in HK. We have hardly any electric two-wheelers because the govt makes it obstructively difficult to get them registered. There's one company that has just managed to break through the red tape - hopefully more will follow.

The other place for news is SYM's own site (but I guess you checked that already) - they signed a deal with GFX in Thailand recently. And they have been working on e-scooters for over a year now - two models - but they aren't great.
