How to fill up a Citycom's Fuel Tank without spilling?
« on: June 09, 2012, 01:05:20 AM »
So I filled up my new-to-me-scoot tonight and I apparently couldn't get a tight enough fit because the pump would click off every couple of seconds.  Then it started to spill out a bit so I stopped.  But the electric fuel gauge only showed 5 bars...how many bars are supposed to be on there?  Seemed like it should have been 7?

I tried to search but couldn't find anything.

TIA.

Yep, 7 bars. I put the nozzle down the filler neck just far enough to allow gas to dispense - squeeze easy - not too much or it will click off. I stop when it shuts off. Usually when bars are blinking and fuel light comes on, I can put about 2 gals. in. Been averaging 74 mpg town/ 65 mpg highway

Thanks Oot.  I'll try that tonight on my way to my buddy's place.

Tried that and it still spilled.  And I had to keep pumping in fits and starts...that's why I think it overfilled.  But I did get it to 7 bars.

I find different pumps act differently, some I can get a nice slow even fill and some seem to be to sensitive and are either off or filling so fast I get overflow. I don't always get the pump to shut off automaticaly, so I try to listen to the sound of the gas while I'm filling. I can usually tell it's getting near full  by the change of the pitch.
Try different pumps, even at the same station, hopefully you'll find on that works for you.
On the road you just have to take your chanses.
  Good Luck, T.

Thanks.  The issue I have is it keeps on clicking off right away...so that's what causes me to overflow is I keep clicking on and off.  is there a way to hold it in so it fuels up?  The sensor seems to not want to fill because it thinks it's not getting a good seal?

I don't really know, on some pumps I seem to be able to do it fine others not. it just seems to depend on the individual pump. I'd be interested to hear what others experience is.

Oot - This is exactly what I did tonight.  Had to hold it at an angle too.  Don't know if that helped or not, but barely squeezing the trigger allowed me to fill up and it clicked off on it's own.  I carefully eyeballed the rest of it and topped it off.  I gotta keep practicting, but hopefully all my gas-ups are like tonight.  And even though I over filled and spilled a bit my last gas-up, I still managed 68 mpg with freeway and surface riding.  Can't wait to fill up later this week after a long run and see if I can hit over 70!

Filling up can be a bit fiddly. Mine often splash back, but if you aim the stream of gas into the hole at the bottom of the filler and keep the stream of gas small enough for air to escape then filling can be done quite quickly.
Citycom 300i - 46 000+ kms what a blast.

Here in Calif. we have "calif. filler necks" on the Citycom, RV 250, and HD 200. Made to recover vapors, they hinder the aim and shoot method. I push the nozzle in just barely enough to dispense, and gently squeeze

I try to listen to the sound of the gas while I'm filling. I can usually tell it's getting near full  by the change of the pitch.

This exactly how I do it. I squeeze gently as I can and fill slowly.
I also take a few paper towels from the squeegee / window wash station just in case I get some overflow.
