Spark color?
« on: May 21, 2017, 10:18:40 PM »
I'm having trouble getting the Samba started.

Backstory: Over the past couple of weeks, the bike would occasionally shut down at high speed, 40+ mph. Now, most of those times I was able to get it started again, but not now. Today I took the carb apart and cleaned the jets and float needle; still no start. I've confirmed it's getting fuel, which leads me to think it could be a spark issue. I replaced the spark plug, and the spark is orange when grounded against the engine. Is this normal? I know for cars it's supposed to be white/blue, but small engines are a different thing entirely.

Are you checking the spark with the electric start or with the kickstart? If the former, how's your battery?

You may want to check if it's any different with the kick start, but I don't know if the spark color is an issue or not.
