Horrible noise on my 2017 wolf!?
« on: April 17, 2017, 01:39:50 PM »
Alright so as of yesterday I hit my 1,000 Mike break in on my bike. I have done everything possible to baby this thing during it's break in. Today was the first day up to 65mph not consistently mostly around 55mph. Anyway I am on my way back to the office sitting at a light an my bike starts making this horrible noise from what sounds like the right clutch cover. I can't really describe it other than a extremely loud whirring. Anyway I pull the clutch in and it goes away. I pull away from the light an go through the gears an I still hear it. Once I get back down to 3rd it starts to go away and by the time I get to the 3rd stop light it's gone. I haven't had time to continue testing yet will update after work. Any ideas though? I felt sick when I heard it lol

If it's a 2017, it should be under warranty. Things that might make noise, at idle, are definitely mechanical in nature. So we're talking spinning clutch or cam chain or something along those lines. Definitely get it checked out.

Update: Rode home the long way... Nothing. Wife wanted to ride her new symba tonight so we went on a short ride... Nothing. So when it happened before it was at a light in neutral. Maybe it wasn't all the way in neutral? I don't know I have never heard anything like it and I can't get it to do it again.

Also the dealer I bought it from said I don't have to take it in on intervals to keep the warrantee in place but on alliance website it says you do. I have not done this. Did I just void my warranty?

Your warranty is good if your dealer says it's good.

That will be interesting to find out since I have to take it to a different dealer. So no one has any thoughts on the noise? It's really weird that it won't do it again and it runs perfectly normal

The incident you describe falls under a technician's worse scenario ... the "intermittent".
I'm a retired licenced plumber and electronics technician.
Customers would often say "Sometimes when I flush the toilet it makes a funny sound" or "Once a month or so the audio will cut out on my TV for a minute and come back on all by itself" .

Run the bike - if it has a fault it will begin to fail more often. If it was a hiccup it may never happen again.  ;)

One of my customers is a mechanic and has been for many many years. Her recommend I just ride it and not worry. If it happens again he recommend I feather the clutch while riding to see if it goes away. If so a piece of metal got in between the discs. He did say I should do another oil change just to be safe.

Clutch cable may need to be adjusted. Is the clutch slipping or is it hard to shift into gear?
Cables do stretch from new including the throttle cable. I would check the owner's manual to see if the clutch lever play is within spec.

There is very little play in my cables.  Plus this didnt sound like it does when a xXxX able needs adjusted. This sound like a scream lol. Put another 50 miles on it since the incident, and it has not happened sonce. Im picking up more oil tonight to do another flush just in case.

Good idea to change the oil. Inspect the oil to see if it smells burnt ( burnt clutch pates), or if there is any significant amount of metal particles in the oil. Most drain plugs have a magnet in them to capture a lot of the metal from the engine.
Hopefully you find none and all is good

Be sure to remove and clean the oil filter screen - check for debris.

Don't know yet, I am going to try to get to the I'll change in the next couple days. Had to drive my truck to work today and tomorrow is my interceptors turn to get out on the road ;) I'll up date you when it's done. I did smell the oil the and it's brand new so it doesn't smell burnt. I just did a freaking oil change Sunday

You could always reuse the oil it it's that new. But Oil is cheap, mechanic and parts aren't.
As far as warranty goes, if you perform all of the maintenance yourself, at the specified maintenance intervals, document what you did, dates, milage at each service, and keep any recipes for the oil and filters/parts, that you may have used.

I've done my own maintenance on many bikes including my new Harley, Moto Guzzi Norge, 2 Vstroms, etc and have never had a dealer tell me that I am voiding my warranty, as long as I can prove that I did all of the maintenance as set out by the manufactures.
I live 4 hours away from most dealers and personally don't trust all of their mechanics as I've had a few bad experiences over the years with poor service, and I rather like doing my own service anyway, as it gives me a good chance to go over my bikes.
