Need help with RV250 muffler
« on: July 01, 2016, 03:57:11 PM »
My 09 RV250 has about 3k miles on it.  Today while riding I noticed the muffler sounded louder than normal.  I saw that I was missing a bolt.  Does anyone know what size bolt this is?  Also, I noticed this piece on the ground in my garage.  I don't know if it part of my scooter or not.  Does anyone recognize it?  Thanks for your help.

The part is a bar end. Look at the 2 ends of your handlebars.

When you tighten the screw at the end, it draws the nut closer, expanding the rubber piece against the inside of the handlebars, so it hopefully won't fall out.

What are the odds it fell out while the bike was in your garage....Buy a lotto ticket.

If I could tell you the size of the missing bolt, I'd buy a lotto ticket.  ;)

I cheated...

The same bolt fell out on my scoot a couple years ago. I was able to find a suitable replacement at Home Hardware. Now I have to find some of those #9 "special screws" that are shown in the diagram. 3 out of the 5 are gone.

JB,

Good to know about the "special screws".  I think I just need to periodically look over every bolt and screw and tighten them up.

I had an issue with my chrome muffler protector. All the bolts/screws (5) came loose and disappeared.  Probably from the riding vibration. I noticed a noise and realized there was only one bolt left holding the protector on.
I found a part number and am trying to find replacement screws.

SPECIAL SCREW 5mm
Not sure if these come with lock washers etc.

Try calling the SYM Warehouse in California. (951-361-9000 ex.2) See if they have the part. If they do you will have to go through a dealer to be able to get it. They will not sell it to you direct.
Good luck!

Remove the 1 remaining bolt and take it to a hardware store..

If it's not really TOO Special, they'll have some that will work (correct diameter and thread pitch)

If there's nothing that would interfere (there's enough clearance on the muffler cap around the bolt heads for the washers) with adding some washers to those bolts...add some washers to those bolts (a flat washer to protect the muffler cap and a lock washer to keep it from coming loose)

If they have stainless hardware, that will keep things looking pretty over the long-haul
