Old SYM models and Taiwan ads from the 60s +
« on: August 14, 2015, 11:08:48 AM »
SYM is also known as Sanyang. That is 三陽 in Chinese. It means auspicious, beginning of spring, and references the good luck of the year of the goat. Depending on the time and place, SYM scooters and motorcycles may show the name SANYANG, 三陽, SYM, or wings on the tank like a Honda.

Here are some ads from the 60s to the 90s. I found these ads by typing Sanyang old advertisements in Chinese.

This price is in 1980s Taiwan dollars

There are a lot more of these. I you are interested, leave a comment and I will make a part 2.

I was inspired to find these after watching a youtube video in which people describe their first memories of riding a SYM. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=piwod4xIUKI
Here is an old tv commercial https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FvKM92KWsXU

Nice photo-history.
We were told that SYM (SanYang) was started by several men who left Honda and started
the SYM business in Taiwan. Not sure if that is true,
A few years ago, Honda made a scooter that looked JUST like our HD 125's and HD 200's.
Interesting.
We are very pleased with our scooters. Top notch.

If you look at some of the 80cc, or 125cc they have wings on the tank. Also, look at the Tact scooter. The ad has the name Honda and Sangyang. The Dio model is confusing because I found ads where it was promoted by Honda and other ads where it was promoted by Sangyang and branded differently as well. Outwardly and mechanically there are no other differences. Certainly Sangyang started as Taiwanese who left Honda. But it seems that maybe they cooperated on some models. (?)

Check out this link that shows a timeline of SYM events.

It says that Sanyang started in 1954, began collaboration with Honda in 1962 and ended that relationship in 2002.

Thanks for posting these images along with the links.  I was aware that SYM made the Cub for Honda and that the Symba was an updated version.  It is striking to see the scooters in the images you posted that remind me immediately of the Honda Aero/Elite scooters from the 80's.
